My Opinion
I think that Stones in Water is a great book. It taut me that even Italian boys were taken away from their family. It is a pretty easy book and you will enjoy it if you like reading about World War 2. I definitely suggest to read Stones in Water.

Chapters 11-End
Roberto and the boy are traveling. They have to worry about food, since they are sharing it with each other and the animals. They also come across a blown up jeep with 4 dead German soldiers in it. Roberto thinks that the villagers did it and that is why they were killed. Once they get to the end of the forest Roberto decides to camp out, but the boy tries to keep going. It is cold so Roberto goes to look for some dry wood to start a fire and trust the boy to not runaway with the supplies. It gets really dark so Roberto turns around and finds the boy gone with all the stuff. Fortunately the sled left marks, so he follows the boy all the way to a town. The town actually looked alive. Roberto sees a stable and starts running toward it until he gets shot.
Roberto wakes up with pain in his arm. He is also tied to a chair without his clothes on in a house. There are 2 men in the room talking about Roberto's clothes, but they are mainly talking about his German boots. Then a woman walks in and takes out the bullet in Roberto's arm with a knife and pours vodka on it. His arm is in great pain and his stomach, but they don't feed him. Instead they give him his clothes and Roberto quickly falls asleep.
Roberto wakes up and is fed goat milk and bread and so is the boy. While eating the men in the room talk to him in different languages. Roberto pretends he can't understand any of the languages and finishes eating. The men get annoyed so they make him walk to an official building. At the building he sees a man, women and children. Around lunch time the boy comes in with a sticky bun so the man leaves. After the man disappears the boy helps Roberto escape and gives him some boots so he doesn't have German ones. Then the boy disappears and Roberto decides to climb in the back of a truck to escape.
The truck stops and Roberto is discovered so, he runs away while 2 people follow him. He hides behind some bushes and bumps his head. Once the 2 people are gone he sees that he hit his head on a boat. Roberto decides to take the boat so that he can go to Italy. He travels on the shallow river and passes some villages. He hopes that no one will try to stop him or kill him. Roberto sees a village and he gets scared so he paddles toward shore and stops for the night. When Roberto gets out of the boat he gets hit on the back of the neck.
Roberto falls, but he stays conscious. The soldier that hit him is Roman and he thinks Roberto is Ukrainian. The soldier speaks Italian so, he ponders telling the Roman that he is Italian. Roberto is to afraid that he will be more punished as an Italian that escaped then a Ukrainian. So he doesn't say a word. The soldier gives Roberto some food and a piece of cloth for his head. Then he forces Roberto into the boat to paddle him to Romania. The soldier lays flat as Roberto paddles.
While Roberto is paddling he is sweating like crazy even though he should be freezing. He also has to worry about the gun pointed at him. To make matters worse, he runs into some Ukrainians. The soldier says don't let them kill me. So Roberto knocks the gun out of the soldiers hands and grabs it. Then he shows the gun to the Ukrainians and smiles and waves. The Ukrainians let him pass and Roberto keeps paddling till he passes out onto the soldier.
Roberto wakes up and is being taken care of by the soldier. He is being fed and cooled down. Roberto has a fever from the bullet wound. The soldier thinks about turning Roberto in as a prisoner of war at Romania so he is taken care of. Instead the soldier cuts the infection and Roberto starts to get better. Roberto finally talks and tells the soldier about himself. The soldier also talks about himself and tells Roberto that his name is Maurizio.
A storm hits while they are out at sea so they go to shore. When they reach the shore they hide in some bushes under their boat. Then some Germans come, but they are not discovered. In the morning they talk about their plans on where they are going. They decide that together they will join the partigiani. The partigiani is a group against the Germans who try to sabotage the war. They bomb bridges and kill the Germans. They also help Jews escape.
Roberto says to Maurizio that we are all stones building a new city just like the stone the girl gave Roberto. Then the boys set out on their journey. While leaving, Roberto starts telling one of Samuele's stories.

Chapter 6-11
Now Roberto has been feeding the 2 girls for more than a week. The girls seem to be getting stronger. Both the girls and Roberto need to be more clever so they don't get caught. One strategy Roberto has come up with his own plan to put stones in his pocket. He does this so it looks like he has rocks in his pocket instead of food.
One day a soldier named Arbeiter stops and asks about Roberto's stones. This leads to Arbeiter throwing a stone at a woman. The woman drops her food and Arbeiter takes it away. During dinner Roberto gets frustrated and enters the chicken coop without looking. He then gets caught by Wasser and is taken to a truck. Enzo follows and is also put into the truck. Both boys are given some food and the truck drives away.
The boys end up in Ukraine where it is very cold. They sleep on the ground outside with barely any covering. Many boys die at this camp, but not by being shot. They die from disease or freezing to death. In a way this is a good thing for the other boys because when someone dies their possessions can be taken away by the boys.
The boys at the camp speak in different dialects which makes it hard to communicate. This is hard when they plot to steal food and cigarettes. A couple times the boys have been successful in stealing food, but the boys weren't shot or whipped. 3 boys have even escaped from the camp and were never seen again. Some say they died in the cold and others say they made it home, but the soldiers didn't make a big deal about it.
One morning Enzo and Roberto wake up to find 2 soldiers dead with vodka bottles. This is great because the soldiers have warm boots while the boys have holey shoes. The boys start taking off the boots while a soldier with a rifle runs toward them. The soldier starts yelling at them so Enzo stops while Roberto starts taking the trousers for Enzo. The soldier ends up shooting at Roberto and it goes over his head. Enzo finally grabs Roberto and the boys are given the boots by the other soldiers.
That night Roberto wakes to find his boots and his old shoes gone while Enzo is fighting the thieves. Then Roberto gets in the middle of the fight until a soldiers gun goes off. The thieves end up sneaking away with the shoes and without the 2 boys knowing who they were. Enzo says he is sorry in a faint voice and tells Roberto when he dies he can have his boots. Enzo also tells him to keep fighting inside and to speak Venetian when he is gone. Lastly, he tells Roberto that he is a good friend and that he will always be in his heart.
In the morning Roberto is holding a dead Enzo. Roberto is very sad, but happy that Enzo didn't freeze to death. Roberto didn't work that morning, but he did take Enzo's boots and let the boys take everything else except his underwear and blanket. Roberto buried him under the snow instead of in the frozen ground and said a few words. Roberto saw the boy that stole Roberto's boots and had killed Enzo. He didn't look ashamed at all.
After burying him, Roberto started walking out of the camp expecting bullets. They never came so Roberto started to run until he couldn't here the camp. While Roberto was walking south he was holding Samuele's (Enzo) blanket the only thing to remember him. He walked all day eating the Brot he had saved from breakfast. At night he stayed under the bent over spruces worrying about being eaten by wolves.
The next morning Roberto found a stream and ate raw little creatures. He followed the stream all day. That night he climbed a tree so he could be safe from any wolves. He woke to an owl and decided to get an early start. While digging a latrine a hamster like creature ran out of the hole he was digging and got scooped up by the owl. When Roberto turned around to finish digging, he became face to face with a hurt, lone wolf. The wolf tried to attack Roberto, but it ended up falling onto his blanket and died. Then Roberto ran away as fast as he could.
While he was walking he sees soldiers walking toward him. He thinks about letting the soldiers capture him so he could have warmth and food, but he would be severely punished. So he decides to cover his blanket with snow and crawl with it on his back. After they passed him, Roberto was shivering from the snow that went in his clothes and that was in his mouth. He decides to follow the tracks that the soldiers made back where they came from so he could find shelter. Along the way he sees a burnt area that could have been a field. This makes Roberto wonder what lies ahead. Eventually he gets to a village and decides to go into a house and goes to sleep.
When Roberto wakes up there is a boy with an ax and he is yelling in a different language. Roberto looks at the boy and around the house. The boy looks younger then Roberto and there is an old man dead on the ground. Roberto realizes that those soldiers have been through this village and that they killed the old man. Eventually when Roberto looks around for food and supplies he sees more dead people in the village. He also sees a dog a cat and 2 canaries. Roberto makes a fire and cooks some food for the boy and himself. The boys end up getting along, but don't communicate. The next day the 2 boys leave with supplies, a dog, a cat, the 2 canaries, and a sled.
One day a soldier named Arbeiter stops and asks about Roberto's stones. This leads to Arbeiter throwing a stone at a woman. The woman drops her food and Arbeiter takes it away. Chapter 1-6
Stones in Water is about 4 boys. They are Roberto, Sergio, Memo, and Samuele and they are all Italian. Samuele is a little more special because he is Jewish. Why is he so special? Well, it takes place in World War 2 when people didn't like Jews. For example, Sergio and Roberto are brothers and their family does not like Jews. The only one that does like Jews is Roberto. Roberto does not know why people dislike the Jews. Samuele is his friend, Jewish or not.
One day Roberto and Memo decide to go see an old Western Movie. On the way to meeting Memo, Roberto ends up taking Samuele and Sergio. On the way to the movie Sergio tells the boys that it is not safe for Samuele to be going to the theater. So, they decide to make Samuele take off his Jewish star.
At the theater German soldiers storm in and push people out of the theater. Then the boys are separated into 2 groups, young and old. The boys are marched in their 2 groups to the Mestre train station where they board the 2 train cars. Once the train starts moving to the west, Roberto starts to worry since this is the wrong way to get back home. Roberto doesn't understand what is going on. The Germans and Italians are on the same side! He is also scared because his brother is with the older boys, but at least he is with Samuele and Memo.
On the train many things happen. First of all the train stops, but no one gets out, but more people get in the train car. Second, no one is given food and the boys are hungry. Third, the boys almost get in big trouble because they start walking toward the door of the train car. A German soldier stops them, but they tell him they just needed to use the restroom. Fourth, they get to the Austrian border and 3 boys decide to get off. The 3 boys are escorted off the train onto the platform where they are shot. At this point the boys are scared and decide to just blend in.
When the train gets to Munich Germany the boys are allowed off the train. While off the train the boys go to the bathroom and are given food, they even see Nazi soldiers. The boys are worried for Samuele because the Nazi's hate the Jews, so they give Samuele the name Enzo. Then the boys have to line up to be chosen by a soldier. "Enzo" and Roberto are chosen together, but Memo is not. The 2 boys must leave their friend and walk through the city to the woods. Then they have to start digging through the hot sunny day. While digging, one of the boys faints and is kicked till Roberto stands up for the kid and gets himself in trouble. Roberto is put into a truck, so Enzo gets himself into trouble to be with Roberto.
The 2 boys get to their new destination, which is a farm, and work for a month. Now they have a brake because they finished the tarmac. The soldiers seem friendlier hear. One of them even told the boys that they are doing well in the war. Another soldier is Wasser who gives them water. During their brake Wasser takes the work boys to a stream. This makes Roberto panic because Enzo is circumcised which only Jews are, but Enzo doesn't worry. Instead, he just undresses and covers himself before he gets covered by the water.
After swimming for a little bit they are called out of the water, but Enzo doesn't come out. This causes a lot of trouble, so Roberto goes after him. Enzo comes out of the water and doesn't get seen by Wasser, but he does get seen by another boy. This is the start of pay back and from now on Enzo must give some of his food to the boy. This isn't just a problem for Enzo, but for Roberto because Roberto must give some of his food to Enzo.
One night a plane landed on the tarmac which woke Roberto up which woke Enzo up. Enzo always told Roberto a story to put him to sleep. It was either a bible story or a made up story with a happy ending. So, Enzo started telling Roberto a story. Roberto knew how tired Enzo was so he pretended to sleep. In the morning they woke up and went to breakfast. They were both very hungry, but they still had to share their food. Then they made a pen for the Polish Jews. Roberto saw them and thought they are nothing to him, but the next day he gave 2 girls some of his breakfast. At dinner he also gave them food and Enzo also gave his food too. Since they didn't have a lot of food they took raw eggs from the chicken coop and ate them. This made the boys feel great and happy that they could help others.
